AC/DC Strikes back : GiG Review
Sitting here wondering on a sunny beautiful day in wellington “How do you beat AC/DC on a Thursday”. Whilst InHisOwnWrite was watching romantic comedies humming Beatles melodies to his muse Scanlor, It hit me like a ton of bricks “AC/DC on a Saturday”. That’s the only thing that could beat this experience, Like how the Terminator 2 sequel eclipsed the the Terminator. Next thing you know i found myself on the party bus en route to the Stadium with three of my bested buddies Jim, Jack and Jose – having one hell of a time.
As i pounded over the concourse to the gig the rock aura had swallowed Wgtn whole. Gone were pink shirts, straightened hair, mandigans (though i did spot the cardigan wearing useless evening post muso Simon Sweetman) and Kanye glasses. Back in black was the theme for the day, Barely a soul passed us that wasn’t wearing a t-shirt baring bogan tendencies. The smell of bourbon oozed out of every corner of the stadium. Vomit and spit lined the concrete paths leading the way to the stage.
Decided to flag Shihad, Great performers but probably had the joy of seeing them 23 times already so the moment would be lost on me. The sky started to turn a char black, the lights dimmed and the sweet sweet organic smell of Aotearoa sifted out into the crowd (Marijuana based – Tarawera/Waihoko strain). The tension was building, But not for me I’d already briefed the peoples closest to me the set list. So was no surprise when the “Rock and Roll Train”
road onto the stage. The atmosphere electric, The guys didn’t hold back bouncing from hit to hit. Everyone knew as soon as Phil Rudd hit those snares they were launching into a iconic anthem “Back in Black” .
The highlight tonite was when the boys powered into their blues inspired classic “The Jack” stepping out from the solid platform set by Williams and Rudd. Angus Young blew the crowd away with his guitar playing ability showcasing the blues music he grew up with. With the crowd behind them chanting the jack, Cameras flashed onto ladies/slappers/sluts wild who in turn showcased their best attributes. It wasn’t their minds either from cougars to MILFs to Gothic chick to punk they all got their “Sisters” out for the boys/crowd/stadium/Internet community.
The applause generated by the rockers was biggest for “Thunderstruck”, “TNT” and “Highway to Hell”. Angus Young absolutely slayed the crowd with his ADD fueled guitar playing and interplay with everyone. His fingers never stopped moving the whole concert and should of been bleeding. His solo on “Bad Boy Boogie” rivals such great guitar solo’s as Slash’s “Love Theme from Godfather” and David Gilmour’s “Comfortably Numb”. Malcolm Young and Cliff Williams were inseparable looking like twin zombies picking away at their strings all night inches away from death. Their back up vocals were very evident and influential as ever. Brian Johnson crooned, growled and yelled his way through this rock odyssey. He’s no Bon Scott but he brings a big stage presence with his sultry and powerful dance moves. Bit disappointed there was no Angus on his shoulders though as was in other concerts! Rudd anchored the band with his no frills 4 by 4 rock and roll beat, He never missed a beat and opened each song as it was the first of the night! The Lighting and stage crew deserve a mention for possibly the best performance for a concert. Every beat was in time with flashing lights, hammer on’s, hammer off’s, growls the list goes on.
As i trod away minus my wallet and my car key- which according to local constabulary is in Upper Hutt . Looking into all the fans drab eyes i could see some light some happiness they’d obtained from this outing. They’d disappear into their tired life, their dead end job, their child payments, their box of Woodstock’s and their land sub-divisions in the Hutt. But they’ll never forget the day they saw AC/DC one of the greatest rock and roll bands in the world play in their backyard!!! I definitely won’t!!!
Thank you’s….
1. Wellington Weather
2. Marijuana (especially the mandel gold)
3. Condoms – controlling bogan population
4. Bourbon – angry juice
5. Slutty tops (someone needs a medal!!)

HH your epic tales are always a pleasure. I enjoy the journies you take the reader on.
However…. Angus Young – I would never disagree he is a master, unless you are comparing the man to a God like David Gilmore, especially the epic solos on the Comfortably Numb masterpiece.
In every way it is comparing apples with pears HH. AC/DC are Rock n Roll and Pink Floyd are progressive Rock. Gilmore would eat him. Sorry, but it’s true.
If it is any consulation, Angus is a better guitar player than my flatmate
