FOOTBALL (Soccer) Is Bigger Than Rugby
Football (Soccer) is on a roll in NZ. The All Whites are going to the FIFA World Cup, the Wellington Phoenix have a home semi final in the Australian A league this weekend, things are good.
As we all know, when the sporting world thinks of NZ, it automatically associates it with the All Blacks & rugby. Fair enough. When you think of England, you think of Football and they haven’t won a world cup in ages either. In fact, quarter final losses may well be a common trait!
Don’t get me wrong, I love rugby (go the ‘Canes!!), but you know something has changed when a Super 14 rugby game attracts 11,000 people on a Saturday then an A league Football game at the same stadium attracts 23,000 on the Sunday.
On top of that, the Phoenix play in front of a sold-out home crowd this Sunday, similar to what the Hurricanes rugby team have done in the past, but I don’t remember the City Council erecting an outdoor screen in the city for people who missed out on tickets to gather and enjoy the game. Just saying, that’s all.
So, I’m going to stick to my original statement: FOOTBALL (Soccer) Is Bigger Than Rugby….. in NZ….. for now….. the Rugby World Cup is just around the corner…..
Good on them too. The beautiful game is the world’s most popular, so why can’t NZ get into it?
Go the PHOENIX!!!!
P.S. Another thing Wellington is doing better than Auckland in…. football. Isn’t Auckland still paying the bill for Beckham-gate and the NZ Knights?
