The magical ipad has been with us kiwi’s officially one week now while parallel imports and imported  ipads for the last few months. I’ve got my hands on one and have had a good play. Yes I said play. The ipad is a toy not a necessity. It does nothing more than what your laptop or netbook doesn’t already do, plus I’m an iphone user so why the hell would I need a stretched out iphone?

I have a few reasons why I want one and not need one.

Check out flipbook, it’s simply O for orsum. Flipboard is an aggregated feed of content using RSS feeds. It creates a magazine of your twitter, facebook and google reader feeds into a sexy shiny format. Flipboard is just one of the great apps. Apple’s free ibooks allows you to upload your pdf files and read them as books on the ipad. I myself have a lot of technical pdf’s that I just can’t stand reading on my laptop, but on an ipad… hell yeah I might read one.

While my cousin Steve Jobs has made the iphone a p0rn free zone for the “un-technical” among us the ipad is a haven for HD bright and sharp pictures with a magnifec display and 720p resolution. Bust out those Jenna Jamison classics people it was meant for it.

While the ipad weighs in a fair amount more than your standard e-reader its still one hand hold able for at least 2-3 minutes…  great battery life too were looking at a realistic 8 hours.

There isn’t a lot the ipad cant do with a bit of know how.  Setup a VPN and you will have access to Hulu which is HBO’s online TV Mecca where you can access programmes for free such as Family Guy, Entourage and Friday night Lights.

Install Air Video on you laptop or PC and stream all your movies and media over the wifi to your ipad.

The jesus pad is probably the best toy there is on the market. If you don’t have a laptop or an iphone then I would say yeah go get one, you will certainly use it. But it’s hard to justify $1000 bucks really if you do own an iphone for a laptop. I will say though once you pick it up you wont put it down.
