So I took the plunge and had an ipad 32gb 3g bought for me from San Francisco. I only did saved $150 dollars as I had to pay tax.

At first I thought I had wasted some well earnt coin and was finding it hard to justify.  But it’s growing on me every day. I’m using it a lot around the office and refusing to print every document in sight like some other people I work with. This weekend I have been using it for on call via a great app called logmein and an ssh terminal client to let me get quick access to servers.

For the 3g I went to Dicksmiths and bought a $20 2degrees simcard. I ipad can send txt messages but not receive, so I sent a txt ordering my data. For my $20 credit I got 1gb of data for free that lasts for 30days. Thanks 2degrees you rock. Live in the wellington CBD and can report some very good data speeds. 2mbit down and at least 1mbit up. Perfect for a quick email for kicking of some cronjobs. I can highly recommend 2degrees.

So far I’ve spent most of my ipad time playing feildrunners. It’s a basic tower game were you have to stop the men from getting to one end of the map. You can tunnel the men anyway you like but it gets pretty hard and rather strategic. It’s a must buy app. It does exist for the iphone also but it just feels a lot better on the ipad and that goes for pretty much all apps.

I have a pretty good collection of video on my home windows 7 server. So I bought an application called Air Video. It’s a client that sits on your machine and streams and converts on the fly video to your ipad or iphone. It’s simply amazing and so simple to setup. It allows me full access to my video library without the hassle of converting all my content. So long as you have a decent wireless connection at home then all should be good.

I must also mention you can jailbreak your ipad just like your iphone. Go to www.jailbreakme.com. Please do your research first before jailbreaking. But I can highly recommend it.
