I have been in a ponderous mood of late. The Cambridge was the location for this discussion with the other authors of WIRB. Whilst sipping on my Raspberry & Coke I waded into a subject I had been thinking about a lot, but am not really an expert in.
 
During a lull in conversation, I pointed out that I have had more enjoyable nights on Ecstasy than on the booze. I happened to make that statement just as the music stopped and everyone in the bar stopped to stare at me. Hate that.
 
After the initial ‘where the fuck did that come from?’ comments, I continued to explain myself.
 
I’m an experimental late bloomer and because of that I have people around me that can advise on such matters with far more authority.

My reasons for the statement seemed to be pretty straight forward.

I have drunk a lot of booze over the years and while I have only ever had the occasional black spots where I can’t remember a thing, and I have certainly had many hazy, out of control moments. Most have been good fun, but slip ups happen (even if I can’t remember some of them).

Depending on my initial mood, drinking has also bought out my ‘mates‘ from time to time. My observations have been similar stories with my friends as well. It’s an 80/20 thing though. The good times have far out weighed the bad – easily.

Ecstasy is something I have only introduced to myself this year. It is illegal and is not for everyone, but then again, alcohol isn’t for everyone either.

I have tried it twice. It was amazing, I’m not going to lie. I had a few beers before popping the pill and the euphoric, calm, clear sensation took over about an hour after.

The usual love feelings flew out of my body towards people I care for and interestingly, it did the same for my mates that are not usually like that. I was in a very good space indeed. The best part was I was able to have a great time with my boozed mates, but with a feeling of control. There were no memory blanks or haziness at all. I remember everything – which stopped the potential for trouble of any kind.

I enjoyed the experience far more than 98% of nights on the booze.

I'm not saying this is what I saw under the influence, but it was very close.

What was the down side? The social aspect. While it takes time to liquor up, one pill and you are done. Drinking is a social exercise. It is a way guys share and talk shit.

I’m not endorsing this drug and saying you should all go out and get on it, it isn’t for everyone. I have been very much against drugs for most of my life – but then I was going to wait till I was married to have sex. I’m glad I didn’t follow through with that either.

I was well informed before I tried Ecstasy. I was lucky to have mates around me that looked after me as well. I was in a comfortable and safe environment. My opinion is that I like myself better on this drug than I do when I’m boozed.

It is a personal choice on using any type of stimulant (including the booze). Make sure you have people around you that will look after you, take care out there.
