I’m going to start with a disclaimer:

What happened in Christchurch was an absolute tragedy. There is no denying that this disaster will go down in as a defining moment in NZ’s short history. What has been pleasing to see is the Kiwi spirit emerging from the rubble and through the whole country. People are moving mountains to help in one way or another. It makes you proud to be a Kiwi.

What also makes me proud to be a Kiwi are the All Blacks. The team is synonomous with NZ culture, heritage and are our biggest global export in terms of how the world views NZ, well along with the Lord of the Rings franchise which a small group nearly fucked up by letting an Australian get involved.

Now another small group of so-called experts have somehow come up with an idea for changing the Silver Fern on the All Black’s jersey to red for the world cup later this year. The reasoning behind the idea was in support of the Canterbury Earthquake…..

WTF indeed

I understand that people want to try anything to help, but how is screwing with our nations identity helping?

We are not talking about removing sponsors names from the jersey, getting rid of the white collars, or adding a third white stripe to the socks to satisfy the major sponsors needs/demands, we are talking about changing the one part of the jersey that thousands have strived for and only a few have got. The part that represents our country, and our teams. It goes beyond rugby. The Silver Fern has momentium for being our countries national flag for fucks sake. It defines us at the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games and even at last years Soccer world cup.

Yes, the significance behind the gesture is great, do something, but don’t change the AB jersey – ever. Let the Black Caps and the Kiwi League team change their kit to drum up sales. The All Black jersey sells because it is what it is.

It is a terrible idea. The only red on it should come from blood spilt during the heat of battle!

Notice how the colour hasn't changed....

I had to laugh at the experts asked to critique the idea. Darren Shand, the All Black Manager, who prior to this post was manager of the Canterbury NPC team and Crusaders respectively and Phil Goff, Leader of the Labour party, whose colours are conveniently red!

If the All Blacks feel it necessary, wear an arm band, emboss something on the jersey like the poppy as has been done in the past. The Silver Fern should remain intact, as is. We don’t want people to get confused in to thinking that the team is now wearing a St Bede’s strip, a new Poneke strip, or a Canterbury hybrid.

The new All Black Strip????

If the All Blacks really want to help the people of Canterbury, and the rest of the country for that matter, they should win the World Cup. That would help. A lot.
