BULL RUSH!!!
Worst job in the world: PC Police. They are ruining it for everyone.
During my few humble years on this, the third rock from the son - our home, I have watched the PC world slowly infest itself upon us (both computer & hippy). It has been a terrible state of affairs.
I can remember Miss Love at Bellevue Primary splitting up the school onto Olympic Countries and competing against each other. There were medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd (gold, silver and bronze) and nothing for fourth. Winning was rewarded. It was fun.
This was the same time where lunch breaks were monopolised between ball tag and bull rush, there was nothing else, mainly because girls had germs.
Why harp on about the past now? Mainly because I played bull rush last night and it was awesome!!! The cream rose to the top, and the fatties got caught first. No one cared, it was the ones higher up the food chain that continued in the game longer.
What really chaffs me is that we encourage participation, but not succeeding. It takes me back to the PC Police. These geeks and nerds who most likely got picked last in teams at school, or because of their stubbies and sandals combos are making the rules about what is more important in the physical world: participation or reward.
Unfortunately for us, participation is winning. It grates me that the new generations of sports elites are sheltered from spreading their physical wings. Ironically, we still reward academic excellence. You don’t do well in maths, you get a D. That’s how it works. Don’t expect to be an accountant.
You play a game of rugby, you don’t keep the score, because we don’t want to hurt the other teams feelings. Let’s make sure that everyone in the team gets a player of the day ice block as well, rather than the kid who carries the team week to week.
I hate the fact that bull rush has been banned. It’s where I learnt how to tackle bigger guys than me. Why not try and win? Why is everyone ok with participating now? Actually, it depends on the sport doesn’t it.
Take our over achieving All Whites as an example. They went far beyond anyone’s expectations. Perhaps we, as a nation of realists expected them to get cleaned up by their opponents. They didn’t, but in the context of the Soccer World Cup, they were still shit. They were never going to be contenders. Yet, somehow, they were our team of the year.
The All Blacks are expected never to lose, ever. When they do, we blame everything outside of the team. Referees, waitresses, cheating Aussie bastards. We expect these 22 men to rise above the environment they grew up in. I can just imagine Dan Carter being told that he can only play if he kicks off his right foot only. All these guys have had to break free of the shackles of participation and the the Kiwi passion for bringing tall poppies down to the levels of all the other losers.
PC Police have a lot to answer for. Little Johnny will miss out on the promotion if he doesn’t work hard to achieve in a professional business and/or sporting world.
Marc Ellis was right to attempt to bring Bull Rush back to the schools. People will get hurt. Ankles will be sprained, clothes will have grass stains and perhaps we as a nation will remember to win and expect more of each other again. Let’s remember to not be happy about participating and focus on winning everything. Australia did that after their shocker performance at the 1984 Olympics. Their Government invested in the Institute of Sport. Now they are a major player.
There is a general election coming up. I’d vote for the party who brings back the biff Bull Rush.
Vent ended.
